It may come as a surprise to you, but the real name of the twice-crowned Oscar winner Emma Stone is actually Emily Stone. This week, she expressed her wish to be referred to by her birth name, despite having spent the greater part of her acting career under her popular pseudonym.
During a mutual interview with her ‘The Curse’ co-star, Nathan Fielder, he declared that he would be addressing the ‘La La Land’ and ‘Poor Things’ performer by her real name throughout their conversation, a practice shared by her close confidants and work partners.
“Before we proceed, I want to clarify something. Her actual name is Emily, but she professionally goes by Emma,” the ‘Nathan for You’ and ‘The Rehearsal’ actor informed the Hollywood Reporter. “So, when there are people who are unfamiliar with her, I find myself saying Emma. But I’m going to stick with Emily from now on.”
“You can use Emma. You can use whatever,” Stone responded. The 35-year-old celebrity mentioned that those who get acquainted with her, including her colleagues like Fielder, whom she got to know through her husband, “Saturday Night Live” writer-director Dave McCary, call her Emily.
“The reason is that my name was already taken [by another Screen Actors Guild actress],” Stone elaborated. “Then, a few years ago, I panicked. For some reason, I thought, ‘I can’t go on like this. Just call me Emily.’ Nathan calls me Em, which is simpler.”
Stone expressed that it “would be really lovely” if her followers used her actual name.
“I want to be known as Emily,” she stated.
Stone initially registered as Riley Stone with SAG at the age of 16, before the organization merged with AFTRA in 2012. However, six months later, she changed it to Emma Stone.
“Selecting a new name at the age of 16 is quite fascinating,” Stone admitted to W magazine in 2017. “So, for about half a year I was known as Riley. I scored a guest appearance on ‘Malcolm in the Middle,’ and one day they were calling, ‘Riley! Riley! Riley! We need you on set, Riley!’ and I was completely clueless who they were referring to. At that point, I realized that I couldn’t be Riley. So I became Emma. But I miss Emily. I would really like to reclaim her.”
She also previously mentioned on “The Tonight Show” that her preference for the name Emma back when she chose it was influenced by her admiration for Emma Bunton, popularly recognized as the Spice Girls’ Baby Spice.
The movie star is among many SAG-AFTRA members who have had to change their names to be part of the union. For instance, Diane Keaton’s birth name is Diane Hall, Nicholas Cage was born Nicholas Coppola but changed his name to distance himself from his renowned filmmaking family, Michael Keaton’s real name is Michael Douglas (not to be mistaken with the well-known Oscar winner, whose late father, Kirk Douglas, went from Issur Danielovitch Demsky to his now famous name). David Tennant was born David McDonald, Ashton Kutcher’s full name is Christopher Ashton Kutcher, Vin Diesel was originally Mark Sinclair, and Elizabeth Banks was born as Elizabeth Mitchell — just to list a few.
