Eighteen months ago, Paramount+ and Hasbro disclosed their collaboration to create a Dungeons and Dragons live-action series. Hasbro, the rights holder of the game since 1949, has been working on various projects related to the franchise, including a first movie, The Honor of Thieves, released in 2023.
Dungeons and Dragons fans have been eagerly anticipating the live-action series, but it was recently revealed that the project is no longer being pursued by the platform. While this is undoubtedly disappointing, Hasbro is not planning to call it quits.
According to this report, Hasbro is looking to revamp the artistic direction before presenting the project to a new broadcaster. Rawson Marshall Thurber (Red Notice), who was assigned to script and direct, is out of the picture.
First Attempt Fell Short
Paramount hasn’t disclosed the reasons for stepping back, but it can be inferred that the creative direction did not align with the streaming platform’s vision. The American studio spent a fortune on the 2023 film featuring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez.
Despite favorable feedback from viewers – a rating of 3.8/5 and over a million admissions in France – the Dungeons and Dragons movie only earned “just” 200 million dollars worldwide, compared to 150 million invested. This slim profit margin of 50 million dollars seems to have deterred Paramount.
The CEO has indicated that a sequel isn’t off the table, but only if made on a smaller budget. Was this the sticking point for the Dungeons and Dragons series? We may never know. One thing is certain, fans will have to wait a bit longer to delve back into this rich universe populated by humans, elves, orcs, and other fantastical creatures.
