Netflix has just confirmed the renewal of this historical action series for a second season, which has been rated 4 out of 5 by viewers.
It’s now official: Last Samurai Standing will be returning to Netflix for a second season. The action series, which debuted on November 13, takes us back to late 19th-century Japan during the early years of the Meiji era.
Action scenes that are truly a sight to behold
Following several centuries of isolation, the Land of the Rising Sun began to open its borders again. This political shift also marked the downfall of the shogunate and the end of the samurai era. Renowned former warrior Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada) has put his sword aside to live a humble life with his wife and children.
When his children fall ill and the couple lacks the funds to afford a doctor, Shujiro is drawn to a poster announcing a nationwide tournament with a prize of 100,000 yen for the winner. 292 fighters heed the call, and a brutal game of elimination begins among the country’s most formidable warriors.
This historical backdrop primarily serves as an excuse for an action-driven plot. Battles unfold throughout the six episodes, whether they’re epic set piece battles or more traditional duels between two fighters. These grandiose sequences lend the series an epic feel and are the main reason for its success among Netflix subscribers.
More than just an actor
The series has benefitted from the involvement of its lead actor, Junichi Okada, who is also credited as a producer and fight choreographer. Writer Shogo Imamura had Okada in mind when he wrote the two novels that Last Samurai Standing is based on (which have also been adapted into a manga).
A total of three seasons are planned. For now, Netflix has only ordered a second season of the show. The series will start filming next year and won’t return to the platform until 2027. Fans of this new hit will have to wait to see what’s next for Shujiro Saga.
The first season of Last Samurai Standing is now available exclusively on Netflix.
