Harry Potter’s Rupert Grint Slapped with a Massive $2.3M Tax Bill – Magic Can’t Save Him Now!

Rupert Grint, best known for his role in the “Harry Potter” film series, is now on the hook for a hefty £1.8 million ($2.3 million) bill after losing a lawsuit against tax officials.

Grint, who portrayed the character Ron Weasley in the popular movie saga, was told to pay the sum back in 2019. This was following an investigation by H.M. Revenue and Customs, the tax authority in the UK, into his tax filings from seven years ago.

According to the tax agency, Grint had incorrectly categorized £4.5 million in residuals from the films — earnings from DVD sales, television syndication, streaming rights, and other revenue streams — as capital gains rather than income. The latter is taxed at a significantly higher rate.

Despite appeals from Grint’s legal team, the lengthy legal saga ended this week with a tribunal judge ruling against the actor. Judge Harriet Morgan stated that the funds “derived substantially the whole of its value from the activities of Mr. Grint” and therefore, “is taxable as income.”

Grint, aged 36, featured in all eight installments of the Harry Potter series from 2001 to 2011, playing the role of the protagonist’s best friend. His earnings from this role are estimated to be around £24 million.

This isn’t the actor’s first brush with tax authorities either. He also lost a separate lawsuit in 2019 over a £1 million tax refund.
