After the smashing hit of “Barbie,” Mattel is teaming up with Universal Pictures to create another live-action movie featuring its best-selling toys.
The toy manufacturer based in El Segundo and the movie powerhouse made a joint announcement on Wednesday, revealing their collaboration for “Monster High.” This upcoming cinema feature draws inspiration from the stylish, plastic offspring of legendary monsters.
To produce the movie under his brand, Weed Road, Universal and Mattel have engaged Akiva Goldsman. Goldsman is an Academy Award-winning scriptwriter famed for “A Beautiful Mind” and “Cinderella Man.” He expressed his long-lasting fascination with Monster High dolls, which his daughters once couldn’t get enough of.
The film “Monster High” is among the numerous movie projects Mattel is working on, all derived from beloved toys. These include American Girl dolls, Hot Wheels, Magic 8 Ball, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, and Polly Pocket. The latter is being developed by MGM, with the creator of “Girls,” Lena Dunham, and the star of “Emily in Paris,” Lily Collins, on board.
Mattel is aiming to replicate the financial and critical success of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” which raked in $1.4 billion worldwide last year and secured eight Oscar nominations.
However, Mattel isn’t the only one on the hunt for the next big toy-inspired hit.
Margot Robbie, who both produced and starred in “Barbie,” is planning to adapt the Sims video game and the Monopoly board game into films through her production firm, LuckyChap Entertainment.
Let’s see which “Barbie” graduate comes out on top.
