The much-anticipated full trailer for the “Deadpool and Wolverine” film was released on Monday morning, following a 30-second Super Bowl teaser that had Marvel enthusiasts buzzing with excitement. The trailer exhibited everything fans have come to expect from a “Deadpool” film — over-the-top action sequences, direct audience address, and a liberal use of expletives.
In the upcoming film, Ryan Reynolds’ character Deadpool is recruited by the Time Variance Authority — a Marvel Cinematic Universe institution that keeps tabs on the various alternate realities and timelines — to rescue his universe. To accomplish his mission, Deadpool requires the assistance of Wolverine, whose alternate universe counterpart appears to have caused his own world’s demise.
Wolverine, portrayed by Hugh Jackman, initially resists involvement, leading to a confrontation with Deadpool, but they eventually decide to collaborate.
Once they form an alliance, they battle against a horde of adversaries, their violent exploits set to the tune of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.”
Devotees of the original comic series were thrilled to see Jackman donning a version of the Wolverine outfit that stays true to the comic book depiction, complete with its yellow, sleeveless design. This film signifies the Marvel Cinematic Universe debuts of both Deadpool and Wolverine, as the original “Deadpool,” “X-Men,” and “Wolverine” films were released under 20th Century Fox. It also marks Marvel’s first venture into R-rated territory.
The trailer also offered glimpses of potential links to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, including brief views of what seems to be Ant-Man’s helmet and skull, and a portal reminiscent of Doctor Strange’s. Slated for release in theaters on July 26, the film signifies Jackman’s reprisal of Wolverine after his retirement from the role following the 2017 film “Logan.”
The trailer also introduced the film’s antagonist, Cassandra Nova, portrayed by Emma Corrin of “The Crown” fame. In accordance with the original Marvel comics, Cassandra is the malevolent twin of Professor Charles Xavier from the “X-Men” series, and she appears to wield mind-manipulation abilities. In one scene, she effortlessly controls Wolverine’s body after he attempts to assault her.
In typical Deadpool style, Reynolds’ character takes a humorous jab at Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige at the trailer’s conclusion. After being offered cocaine by Leslie Uggams’ character Blind Al, Deadpool remarks that Feige has specifically forbidden it.
“Feige has explicitly said no to cocaine,” Deadpool quips. “He’s familiar with all the street names, he even has a list.”
Prior to the trailer’s debut, Reynolds, who also had a hand in writing and producing the film, posted a video of the end-credits scene from “Deadpool 2,” which notably included Jackman as Wolverine. “After seven years and a lot of pleading, my dream for the Deadpool 2 end credit scene finally became a reality,” Reynolds shared on X. He subsequently posted the official poster for the movie, captioning it, “Hang it in the Louvre.”
