In the show “Anthracite”, set partially in the 90s, Jean-Marc Barr appears 30 years younger. What was the production’s secret to this impressive feat?
In “Anthracite”, the new French series on Netflix that premiered on April 10, Ida, portrayed by Noémie Schmidt, travels to a small village in the Alps to search for her kidnapped father, Solal Heilman.
This former journalist, played by Jean-Marc Barr, had investigated a sect based in the region that had carried out a mass suicide in 1994. Now, thirty years later, it appears Solal has returned to the village to continue his work.
Why did he decide to return? Is his disappearance connected to the murder of a woman, killed following the rituals of the bizarre community? Ida, with the help of Jaro (Hatik), a small-time criminal seeking redemption, will attempt to unravel this mystery.
They quickly realize their involvement in this case is no coincidence, and the answers they seek are deeply rooted in their own past secrets.
Flashbacks to the 90s
The investigation in “Anthracite” spans two different eras, with numerous flashbacks taking viewers back to the mid-90s. While the four main characters were not yet born during this time, we do get to see one familiar face during these time jumps: Solal, the journalist portrayed by Jean-Marc Barr.
Naturally, Ida’s father’s face had to be made to look younger to fit the timeline. So how did the production team manage to make the actor look younger? Was it makeup or special effects?
How Did They Make Jean-Marc Barr Look Younger?
While it’s common to use makeup and other tricks to age actors, it’s more challenging to do the opposite. For “Anthracite”, the production team decided to use special effects to take 30 years off Jean-Marc Barr’s appearance.
Contrary to his co-stars who sometimes had to spend hours in the makeup chair, like Hatik with his large back scar, Barr didn’t have to put in any extra work to look younger.
“I filmed all the scenes normally and was then made to look younger in post-production,” he shared, adding jokingly: “I’ve never had so much hair.” His character also loses a leg during his dangerous investigation.
“For my leg that was cut off, we used the same method. It was removed in post-production. In the end, the only difficulty I had on the set of the series was running (laughs).”
