Iconic Western Gets a Remake After 65 Years by Heroes’ Creator – Unbelievable!

Released in 1960, this iconic western scored 4.2 out of 5 stars and features several Hollywood legends. Now, Tim Kring, the creator of “Heroes,” is set to remake it into a TV series.

The Magnificent Seven, directed by John Sturges, holds a special place in the pantheon of all-time greatest westerns. This ensemble film, released in 1960, is an unofficial remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. In both versions, a band of mercenaries is hired by desperate villagers to drive away a group of bandits looting their wealth.

Three sequels and a remake have already been made

A staple of Hollywood’s golden age, The Magnificent Seven boasts a star-studded cast, including legends such as Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen (in his first significant film role), Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, and Eli Wallach. This dream cast led to numerous ego clashes during filming.

The film was a critical success in the United States upon its release and a smash hit worldwide. The Magnificent Seven spawned three sequels: Return of the Magnificent Seven in 1966, Guns of the Magnificent Seven in 1969, and The Magnificent Seven Ride in 1972. In 2016, the franchise made a big comeback with a remake directed by Antoine Fuqua.

This reboot starred contemporary heavyweights such as Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Ethan Hawke. Now, almost a decade later, another remake is in the works, this time as a TV series. MGM+ has commissioned a Magnificent Seven series, with Tim Kring (Heroes) tasked with writing it.

A series that harks back to the original film?

“Tim Kring is a master storyteller,” declared the head of the platform in a statement. “Tim, along with Donald De Line, Larry Mitisch, and Bruce Kaufman, have crafted a series that encapsulates the energy of classic westerns, pays tribute to the legacy of the original film, and builds on timeless themes of the power of unity against oppression and the redemption of tormented heroes who come to the aid of those in need.”

Eight episodes have been planned for this mini-series. No casting has been announced yet, but whoever lands the roles will be following in the footsteps of bona fide cinema legends. The series is set to start filming in June, with a probable release date in 2027.

The MGM+ platform is available as a paid subscription on Prime Video.
