Amazon is stepping up its game in the adaptation of successful video game sagas into series. Following Fallout and God of War, the next project of the American company for its Prime Video platform has been revealed.
Fans of Life is Strange have been eagerly awaiting this news for almost 10 years: a decade after the release of the first game, this fantastical and melancholic masterpiece is finally going to be adapted for television. And it’s Amazon that has hit the jackpot.
The streaming platform has specialized in these kinds of big-budget projects: the American giant made a big splash with Fallout last year and is currently developing two other adaptations of successful video game sagas – namely God of War (all the details to date here) and Tomb Raider – which we are eagerly anticipating.
What is Life is Strange?
In 2015, publisher Square Enix, in collaboration with French studio Dontnod, released the first part of a promising game that tells the story of Max Caulfield, a teenager who discovers the ability to rewind and manipulate time, and her childhood friend Chloe Price, united for better or worse.
Players quickly fell in love with this game, both for its substance and its style, with its meditation on the passing of time, on grief, and the transition to adulthood. In 2016, Square Enix announced that it had struck a deal with Legendary Pictures to bring this incredible story to the screen. But since then, there has been no news… until today.

What we know about this adaptation
Amazon has subsequently announced the name of the person who will be in charge of bringing Life is Strange to the screen. Charlie Covell, who shone on Netflix with The End of the F**king World but disappointed with Kaos (cancelled after season 1), has the daunting task of writing the series, which should appeal to fans of the franchise as much as to viewers who know nothing about this fantastical universe.
We even know what the first season of the series should be about from its official synopsis: “As Max struggles to understand this new ability, the two friends investigate the mysterious disappearance of a classmate, thus uncovering the dark side of their town, which will ultimately force them to make an impossible choice, a matter of life or death, that will mark them forever.”
Raoul Barbet and Michel Koch, the two creators of the game, will not be involved in the development of the series, even though they told us in 2016 that they were interested in the project: “The IP [NDR: the license, or “Intellectual Property”] belongs to Square Enix; it’s up to them to decide what they want to do. Of course, we would be delighted to participate in this adventure. At the moment, we still don’t know what our level of involvement in this project will be.”
This is a disappointment for fans but a common practice in Hollywood. Now, all that remains is to see whether the Life is Strange series will stay true to the original game. Prime Video has yet to provide any details on the next stages of production, including casting, filming, and release.
So, we’ll have to be patient.
