Top Crime Series Writer Unveils Shocking New Creation – You Won’t Believe What’s Next!

What does “Task,” the brand new series from Brad Ingelsby, creator of the crime mini-series “Mare of Easttown,” bring to the table?

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

In the industrial outskirts of Philadelphia, an FBI agent leads a special team tasked with investigating a string of burglaries orchestrated by an unsuspecting family man.

WHO’S IN IT?

Mark Ruffalo, known for his roles in movies (especially in the Marvel franchise), is also a beloved TV actor. Specializing in high-profile mini-series (I Know This Much Is True and All the Light We Cannot See), he makes his comeback with Task, the new creation by Brad Ingelsby (Mare of Easttown).

In this HBO mini-series, Mark Ruffalo plays Tom Brandis, an FBI agent who returns to duty after taking time off following a family tragedy. Still deeply affected, he struggles to balance his professional responsibilities, his complicated relationship with his daughter, and his own demons.

The other main role of the show is played by Tom Pelphrey (Ozark). He portrays Robbie, a garbage man grieving the loss of his brother. With two accomplices, he supplements his income by robbing dealers. His heists draw the attention of the authorities, and a team led by Tom Brandis is assembled to investigate.

The show’s cast also includes Emilia Jones (CODA), who plays Maeve – Robbie’s niece who has to sacrifice her youth to care for her uncle and his two nephews. Fabien Frankel (House of the Dragon) plays an ambitious federal agent, and Raúl Castillo portrays one of Robbie’s accomplices.

IS IT WORTH WATCHING?

Four years after Mare of Easttown, the series that introduced him to the mainstream audience, Brad Ingelsby returns with a mini-series titled Task. In this new production, the American screenwriter once again immerses us in the suburbs of Philadelphia and weaves a crime story intertwined with a portrait of American society.

The series opens with a non-dialogue montage introducing the two series’ protagonists, an FBI agent and a garbage man. This sequence immediately draws a parallel between two characters who will then be pitted against each other throughout the program: one will be tasked with investigating the crimes committed by the other.

A Crime Series that Breaks with Genre Conventions

But this is not a simple cop and robber story. The team formed by the FBI forces Tom to manage agents who are not well-suited for this type of mission, due to budget cuts that limit resources. Money is also the main motivation for the crimes committed by Robbie and his accomplices, not for personal enrichment but to supplement an insufficient salary to decently support their respective families.

So, here we have a crime series that relies neither on the suspense of the culprit’s identity nor on the clash between good and evil. On the contrary, Task confronts us with our own convictions and moral dilemmas, without ever passing judgment on the actions of its protagonists and their personal flaws.

While not a sequel, this new series feels like an extension of Mare of Easttown. Brad Ingelsby revisits the same themes he previously explored in his earlier creation, but applies them to new characters and a different situation. It’s his way of saying that in four years, America’s situation has only changed for the worse.

Will it Make a Splash at the 2026 Emmys?

Task confirms both Mark Ruffalo’s immense talent for complex characters and establishes Brad Ingelsby as one of the greatest screenwriters in television today. The entire cast deserves praise, with a special mention to Tom Pelphrey who delivers a top-notch performance here.

There’s no doubt that the series will be a hot topic throughout its seven-week run, and then next year at the award ceremonies. The mini-series format, much loved by streaming platforms, sees the addition of a new high-profile production that should not leave societal crime drama fans indifferent.

Episodes of Task can be followed weekly exclusively on HBO Max.
