All three seasons of “Pose” can now be found on the Disney+ platform. This is an ideal opportunity to reflect on how this show has reshaped the landscape of American television series.
In 2018, amidst a conservative Trump administration, Ryan Murphy is about to revolutionize television with a new series: Pose. The concept originated from a young scriptwriter, Steven Canals, who wanted to shine a light on a lesser-known aspect of American culture.
This series transports viewers to 1980s New York. During this period, the gap between the Wall Street elite and the working class had never been wider. Amid this disparity, the African-American and Latino LGBT community gathered in clubs to partake in voguing.
A World in the Shadows
This dance style, which Madonna made famous in 1990, originated in ballrooms where costumed and rhythmical competitions – mimicking the high society – took place for prestigious trophies. This subterranean micro-society, dormant by day and vibrant by night, was captured in the cult documentary “Paris Is Burning” in the late 1980s.
Over the course of three seasons, Pose follows a group of characters in this world that yearns for visibility. While the storyline is fictional, many elements and subplots are based on real events. The drama boldly tackles important issues such as AIDS activism, prostitution, and discrimination.
Historic Milestone
From its debut in June 2018, the series has turned the television world upside down. With Pose, Ryan Murphy has assembled the largest cast of transgender actors in TV history. Five transgender women portray the five heroines of the series – Michaela Jae Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Dominique Jackson, Angelica Ross, and Hailie Sahar. In total, more than 140 queer individuals contributed to the project, either in front of or behind the camera. This was a first.
While one might assume that the show caters to a niche audience, its success proves otherwise. Pose has made its mark on major awards ceremonies, such as the Emmy Awards – television’s equivalent of the Oscars – with over 20 nominations and 4 wins.
Most notably, in 2022, Michaela Jae Rodriguez won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series. She is the first transgender performer to win this award in the history of the Golden Globes, a revolution that aligns perfectly with the show’s legacy.
All episodes of Pose are available on Disney+.
