Netflix has released the trailer for its show “Néro”, a historical epic featuring Pio Marmaï as a mercenary assassin.
Following The Three Musketeers, Pio Marmaï travels even further back in France’s history. The actor, who played Porthos in the duology based on Alexandre Dumas’ work, will now portray Néro, a feared assassin in early 16th century France. His life as a mercenary takes a turn when he learns of a daughter whose life is endangered by powerful foes.
Drawing inspiration from swashbuckler films and the video game Assassin’s Creed, Néro also takes on the form of a historical western. Backed by a significant budget, the show also boasts a star-studded cast: joining Pio Marmaï are Olivier Gourmet, Alice Isaaz, as well as Camille Razat and Tom Leeb.
A Fictional Series Set in Historical Reality
“The development of this project, produced by Karé Productions, took four years. This series is going to surprise. It’s set in the 16th century, during the greatest drought France has ever experienced,” Netflix’s vice-president of content Pauline Dauvin told French Film. “The series follows a hitman who becomes a romantic hero and finds his daughter in a swashbuckling adventure.”
The filming of Néro took place during the summer of 2024 in the south of France, specifically in the cities of Menton, Nice, and Perpignan. Some scenes were also shot in the north of Spain, in the Barcelona region. This location shooting adds additional prestige to this series, which consists of eight one-hour episodes.
The series Néro, starring Pio Marmaï, will be exclusively available on Netflix starting October 8.
