Don’t mess with Tiffany Haddish, because she won’t hesitate to retaliate.
The star of “Girls Trip” and “Haunted Mansion” confessed that she isn’t afraid to tackle cyberbullying head-on, especially when it’s aimed at tarnishing her good name. She’s even been known to provide her detractors with an unexpected dose of reality.
Considering the relentless criticism the comedian has received — be it her fleeting yet harmful grooming scandal, her multiple DUI charges, or her contentious visit to Israel this past February — she’s resorted to blocking certain keywords on Instagram, including “setback,” “pedo,” and “not funny,” she confided to L.A. Times columnist Amy Kaufman recently.
She’s been doing more than just blocking, though. Haddish has plunged into the world of digital vigilantism.
The 44-year-old entertainer revealed that she employed a digital forensics expert to trace the origins of the death threats she received, discovering that 75% of them were bots from Malaysia and Iran. The Emmy and Grammy-winning star also confessed that she set up a pseudonymous Instagram account, where her alter ego, Sarah, would strike back at anyone who dared to badmouth her. She does this by unearthing tidbits about the trolls’ private lives and using them to her advantage.
“I’ve become adept at digging up people’s information — like pulling up credit reports and police records. All of that can be done for a mere $1.99,” stated Haddish. “There are times when I’m so infuriated that I’ll get their phone number and just give them a call.”
Believe it or not.
“Oh yes, I have made calls, dear,” she affirmed. “They’re taken aback when I call. They’d say, ‘I can’t believe you even noticed that.’ You posted an entire video, a full five-minute video! People think they can say whatever they want on the internet without repercussions. I do my utmost to refrain from responding, but I’m only human.”
The lead actress of “The Afterparty” and “Night School” also shared with Kaufman her feelings of being “hunted” and how this influenced her decision not to have children. She opened up about suffering through eight miscarriages, which she likened to having “your soul fall out of your body,” and undergoing an abortion.
“The thought of bringing someone who looks like me into this world, knowing they may be hunted or killed, is unbearable,” she penned in “I Curse You With Joy,” her book of autobiographical essays that’s set to be published on Tuesday. “I can’t stand the anxiety of worrying every time my Black child heads to school or goes out with friends, that they might not make it home.”
Haddish also touched on how she’s been trying to lessen her workload, her mental health — which, by the way, she insists is perfectly fine — and the shift in attitude she’s noticed from industry people following her scandals. She also discussed her past experiences with homelessness, domestic violence, and sexual assault, which she has used as material for her work.
