The fourth season of this Netflix series experiences a challenging start, with nearly half of the viewership from the previous season which aired two years prior.
A drop in viewership was expected, but not such a steep decline. Nearly a week after its release on Netflix, an initial review of the fourth season of The Witcher reveals an even worse situation than anticipated. The departure of Henry Cavill, confirmed at the end of the third season aired two years prior, has dealt a serious blow to the fantasy series.
What are the viewership numbers for season 4?
In 2023, the third season of The Witcher had accumulated 15.3 million views in a week worldwide — a total lower than that of season 2 (18.5 million), but significantly higher than the start of the prequel mini-series Blood Origin (4.6 million). As for season 4, it has only reached 7.3 million views on day 7, a 50% drop compared to the previous season.
Despite Netflix investing 221 million dollars into the production of this fourth season, which introduces Liam Hemsworth as the Witcher Geralt of Rivia. This is the biggest budget allocated to the series: season 3 had cost “only” 175 million.
What’s in store for the series?
This resounding flop could cause Netflix to break out in a cold sweat, as they had already ordered — and shot — season 5 even before the airing of the previous one. Fortunately, it has been announced as the very last.
The platform has also begun to scale back around the franchise: the shooting of the mini-series dedicated to the Rats has been halted, and the episodes already filmed have been edited into a telefilm, released without any announcement or promotion. The other spin-off projects have been canceled.
The fifth season of The Witcher will therefore mark not only the end of the series, but also the end of the universe developed around Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels. It is expected next year exclusively on Netflix.
