Is the shoot for the “Tomb Raider” series about to kick off? The latest buzz suggests that this summer might be the right time!
Update 04/09: It’s now official, Sophie Turner will be portraying the heroine for the first time on the small screen for Prime Video. She follows in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in the cinema. The platform announced it on their social networks:
“Sophie Turner will play Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider series produced by Amazon MGM Studios. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner. Jonathan Van Tulleken is the director and executive producer, while Chad Hodge joins the team as co-showrunner and executive producer.” Update ends
The shoot for the Tomb Raider series by Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Prime Video is reportedly about to start: predicted to be late July/early August in London, according to Geek Vibes Nation.
In January 2023, it was revealed that the renowned British scriptwriter and Emmy winner, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, had been hired to write and produce the series for Amazon, as part of her multi-million dollar contract with the streaming service.
The show is expected to follow the famous character, archaeologist and adventurer, Lara Croft. Little news was subsequently released, except for the fact that Sophie Turner, former Sansa from Game of Thrones, was the top pick to play the heroine.
As Dark Horizons recalls, last April, British tabloids had even declared that the project was dead, the series having gone through “two writers’ rooms and costing tens of millions of dollars in development”.
A few weeks later, however, these cancellation rumors appeared premature, as a photo of Sophie Turner showing off dreamy abs during her vacation caused quite a stir.
However, it’s important to note that Prime Video has not yet officially commented on the series, its casting or production. So, for the time being, it remains a rumor, a rumor that coincides with the 24th anniversary of the 2001 movie, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig and Iain Glen, whose trailer brings back the 1990s, as you can see for yourself in the sidebar of this article.
While we await more news on the upcoming series, the 2001 movie can be revisited on Netflix.
