Jodie Turner-Smith, who filed for divorce from Joshua Jackson less than a year ago, is expressing her best wishes for him and his love life.
The actress, known for her roles in “Queen & Slim” and “The Acolyte,” expressed her support for Jackson’s rumored relationship with Oscar-winning actor Lupita Nyong’o in an interview with the Cut. This comes after she filed for divorce in October, following which Jackson and Nyong’o were rumored to be dating after being spotted together in public.
Nyong’o announced her split from TV personality Selema Masekela on Instagram shortly after news of Turner-Smith’s divorce petition broke. She made accusations of “deception” and “heartbreak.” Jackson and Nyong’o were later seen holding hands and grocery shopping together. They were also spotted kissing during a vacation in Mexico.
Turner-Smith, 37, and Jackson, 46, had a secret wedding in August 2019 and share a child, born in April 2020. Their four-year-old daughter, Juno Rose Diana Jackson, is an important reason for Turner-Smith’s support of Jackson’s new relationship with Nyong’o, according to the “After Yang” actress.
“We need happiness in order to peacefully co-parent. I’m trying to get us to the Gwyneth [Paltrow] and Chris Martin level,” she conveyed to the Cut. “I genuinely hope they’re joyous and that it positively impacts us as a family.”
In 2019, Turner-Smith gained recognition for her lead role in Lena Waithe’s and Melina Matsoukas’ film ”Queen & Slim,” where she played Queen alongside “Get Out” star Daniel Kaluuya’s Slim. Despite her breakout role, many tabloids only identified Turner-Smith as Jackson’s “girlfriend” at the film’s premiere.
“It detracted from a moment that I needed to have for myself,” she explained to the Cut.
She further elaborated: “It exposed a very painful discussion about my personal life. And pregnancy is the most vulnerable period of a woman’s life.”
Since “Queen & Slim,” Turner-Smith has taken part in several film and TV productions, including Kogonada’s “After Yang” with Colin Farrell, Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” multiple episodes of Netflix’s “Sex Education,” and most recently, the new Star Wars spinoff series “The Acolyte.”
In a February interview with the Times of London, Turner-Smith expressed that she views divorce not as a failure, but as a turning point.
“It’s incredibly brave to acknowledge when something isn’t working and to make a change. I always want to set that kind of example for my daughter,” she stated.
